Easiest Textures Scarf/cowl

Welcome back to Crochet Smash! If you loved our previous tutorial on the matching grit stitch hat, you are going to love this project. Today, we are learning how to crochet a cozy, textured accessory using the Fancy Grit Stitch . This beginner-friendly crochet tutorial shows you how to create a beautiful textured crochet cowl or a full-length crochet scarf using an easy-to-remember pattern that works up incredibly fast.

We will go over how to make this pattern flat, and discuss the minor differences between working the grit stitch in the round versus a flat rectangle

Materials Needed

Yarn: Medium weight yarn (Featured: Red Heart Super Saver)

Crochet Hook: 5 mm hook

Notions: Yarn needle

The Pattern Formula

To customize the width of your grit stitch scarf pattern, simply start with a chain using any multiple of 2 + 1. For this specific tutorial layout, we are starting with 17 chains (16 + 1)

Step- by step- pattern

Row 1: Establishing the Base
Start with a chain of 17
In the second chain from your hook, work 1 half double crochet (hdc)
Skip the next chain stitch
In the next stitch, work 1 single crochet (sc) and 1 double crochet (dc) both into that same stitch.
Repeat this sequence: Skip 1 stitch, then work (1 sc, 1 dc) into the next stitch all the way down the row
When you reach the very last stitch of the row, end with 1 hdc

Row 2: Building the Texture

Chain 1 and turn your work

Work 1 hdc directly into the very first stitch.  Skip the next stitch. In the next stitch, work 1 sc and 1 dc into the same space
Repeat the sequence: Skip 1, then work (1 sc, 1 dc) into the next across the row
Finish the row by placing 1 hdc into the turning space/last stitch

Row 3 & Beyond:

Simply repeat Row 2 until your project reaches your desired length! Every single row will start and end with a half double crochet, maintaining neat edges.
