Haapy as a butterfly: Mixed Media Art

Butterfly is the symbol of growth, vulnerability, celebration and also soul. it also represent symbol of Love in some cultures.

I think, butterflies are happily accepting the changes comes in life and they are easy going.

When growing up in southern India, we had several butterflies always in the yard, flying from flower to flower. The colours on the wings were amazing.
Here is my butterfly, flying over the fence, looking for happy flowers.

Process of making

The paper was painted with gesso first. Then added fiber paste all over. Made the fence like markings with a fork.
Then, layers of painting and stenciling added. The butterfly wings are filled with tiny beads.
I felt a finished feeling when this much was done. Now, my inner critic is telling me there is not enough flowers, not enough plants,...
Any suggestion from you?

  1. Hi bindu; your butterfly sounds awesome; ask yourself why are you critical. does it really need more flowers or are you unsure what you would do next if this project were complete? sometimes the best way to find joy in a project is to give it away. good luck, max

    1. You ask me the triggering questions. Thank you. I am afraid of starting the next project, in my innermost mind.

  2. I don't you need anything more. I feel less is better and leave it the imagination of the viewer.

  3. Your butterfly takes center stage as it should - if you add anything else I think you would take away from this. I'm a bit of a butterfly nut - I plant flowers just to attract them - and I really enjoy this picture.

  4. Hi Bindu.
It's perfect as is. you've created a lovely and stunning piece of art.
    Just frame it. Well done.

  5. Hi Bindu, if there were too many beautiful flowers the butterflies might always be settled there and we would not have the joy of watching them fly as much. There seem to be just enough of each, as is so often the case.

Simple and powerful is always better than cluttered and confusing. I am a big fan of butterflies so am always happy to see them.

  10. I know how hard it is to decide when a painting is done. You are always your own worst critic, but then no one else can answer that question for you, since no one else can see your original vision for the piece. I like to take a little time away from a piece when I can't decide if it needs something more. I also think Max makes a great point. My vote? It looks great the way it is!

  15. I like the balance of elements and it makes sure the butterfly is the star. Cool idea to use the beads as it gives it texture.

  16. Hey Bindu, love your blog background and colors and it kind of went with your post. I just remembered how it has been long since I have noticed an actual butterfly and this means I have been within built up areas too much and need to get out. I think your work of art is complete as I see it. You know how art is. It is the individualism that is you. How you feel and what you feel as you do the work. Everyone will see it differently and have different views but I like it as it is.

  18. Bindu, personally, I love all the great texture. But if your instinct is "my inner critic is telling me there is not enough flowers, not enough plants" - then just start a new one. Make it a series, and compare and contrast. Hats off to you for going forth with all your creativity.
