Wednesday's Mixed Media work and tips

I am not particularly interested in making something. But, doing nothing is not so great.
So, decided to view Kelly Donovan's Youtube video to get inspiration.

Kelly knows a lot about mixed media, (in my humble opinion).
She has a unique style of explaining things.
Now, she is kind to join me in her facebook group.
Today, I decided to work on watercolor paper.

It is hard for me to draw. Glad to tell you, the eyes came out the way I wanted. I call this one "Loneliness".
I want to say, I made a stamp with rubber bands as mentioned in the book I was reading. I used acrylic paint to stamp it over the eye. The white part is homemade fiber paste.

While making the background, I placed a printer paper on the sheet to remove excess paint. See what happened...
Isn't it beautiful? I have another paper to torn and use on the future projects. When I mixed one color more than I wanted to, it was used on my journal

Do you have any tips to share?

  1. Very cool project! and ty for mentioning me. I love your painting! I like to use paper towel to soak up paint and it adds some texture and dries and you can use it all up...rip it up and use on mixed media piece!

  3. The more you draw, the better it gets. Or at least it seems to and you like the results better. I think the eye is fantastic. I like to take my wet page and rub another sheet of watercolor paper and then pull them apart just like you did. Now you have 2 pages to work on. And a small investment is a white pen. It adds a lot of depth. I like Uniball-it is the only one I would buy and you can find them for around $3. The bad thing is they run out of ink faster than a black pen. Some other white pens don't seem to work as well. If I could only use 2 writing items it would be a white uniball pen and a black Sharpie. And lastly, lots of layering. Don't be afraid to layer colors over each other. Someone told me not to fall in love with your background. Sometimes I do anyhow. You could even use crayons to layer and then use whatever paint you have over the crayons to get a cool look since the paint won't stick to the crayons. I think I've said enough...Keep at it...your pages are looking good.

  4. Thanks for all great ideas. I will try to buy a white pen. I have sharpies, black metallic. Crayons, I am thinking about. There is one shoe box full of broken crayons in my daughter's closet. I am going to try them.
